Hospital-based overnight cardiorespiratory polygraphy is a diagnostic test used to assess sleep apnea. During this procedure, the patient is monitored overnight to record various aspects of sleep, including breathing, heart rate, oxygen levels, and body movements. This data helps doctors identify breathing issues during sleep and make an accurate diagnosis.
During the polygraphy, the patient will wear several sensors that measure different parameters. These sensors may include electrodes to monitor brain activity, breathing sensors, and a pulse oximeter to track oxygen levels. The test lasts all night, and the patient can behave normally while sleeping. In the morning, the sensors are removed, and the data is analyzed.
The overnight cardiorespiratory polygraphy lasts approximately 8 to 10 hours, depending on the duration of the patient’s sleep.
How should I prepare for the polygraphy?
Before the test, it is recommended to avoid alcohol and stimulants like caffeine or energy drinks, and to wear comfortable sleepwear.
Is the test painful or uncomfortable?
No, the test is not painful. Many patients feel comfortable and can sleep as usual, although they will have sensors on them.
How long does it take to analyze the results?
Analyzing the results may take a few days to a week, after which your doctor will explain the findings and the next steps.
