Mastitis is an inflammation of the breast that usually occurs as a result of an infection, and most often affects women who are breastfeeding. This inflammation causes pain, redness, swelling and sometimes fever. Mastitis usually occurs when the milk ducts become blocked, allowing bacteria to grow in the mammary glands. If it is not treated, mastitis can lead to serious complications, so it is important to recognize the symptoms and start treatment in time.

Frequent breastfeeding or weaning – The most important step in the treatment of mastitis is regular breast emptying. Breastfeeding is effective in clearing milk engorgement and reducing inflammation. It is recommended that the baby suckle from the affected part of the breast, as sucking helps open blocked ducts. If the baby is not able to suck, a breast pump is used.

Warm compresses – Heat helps open the milk ducts, reduces pain and speeds up the healing process. It is recommended to apply warm compresses or baths before breastfeeding or weaning.

Breast massage - Light breast massage can help release engorged milk and relieve pain. Massage the breast from the outside in, towards the nipple, to help open the ducts.

Antibiotics – If an infection occurs, the doctor may prescribe antibiotics that are safe for breastfeeding. Taking antibiotics helps eliminate the bacteria that cause the infection.

Rest and hydration – Recovery from mastitis requires plenty of rest and fluid intake. Drinking enough water helps reduce dehydration and improve milk production.

Treatment of mastitis usually lasts from a few days to a week, depending on the severity of the inflammation and whether an infection has occurred. If mastitis is treated promptly and properly, symptoms usually resolve within 48 hours. If the condition worsens or does not respond to treatment, additional medical attention may be needed, such as drainage of the abscess or changes in antibiotic therapy.
