Processing the navel of a newborn is a very important part of daily hygiene in the first month of life. The umbilical cord, which connects the baby to the mother during pregnancy, usually dries up and falls off a few days after birth. Until then, it is necessary to carefully maintain the umbilical wound to prevent infections.

An umbilical wound should not usually be soaked in water until it heals, so the area around the navel should be cleaned carefully. A sterile gauze pad or clean cloth is used, which is dipped in a saline solution (or some other antiseptic recommended by the doctor). Gently wipe the area around the navel with this solution, being careful not to touch the wound itself. The umbilical wound should be kept dry and clean, so excessive wiping or the use of alcohol should be avoided, as this may cause irritation or prolonged healing.

The umbilical wound usually falls off between the 7th and 14th day of life, and after that the remaining area should continue to be cleaned until it heals. Once the umbilical wound has fallen off, you can gently wash the area with mild soap and water, then dry your baby's skin with a clean towel. Always pay attention to changes in the appearance of the navel; if redness, discharge or an unpleasant odor appears, contact the pediatrician, as these may be signs of infection.
