Allergological skin tests for nutritional allergens are a diagnostic method used to detect food allergies. When certain foods cause unwanted reactions in a person, these tests help to precisely identify which specific ingredient is causing the allergic reaction. This procedure involves applying small amounts of food extract to the skin, usually on the forearm, after which the body's response is monitored in the form of redness, swelling or itching. These reactions indicate hypersensitivity of the body to certain nutritional allergens, which is important for establishing the right diagnosis and applying adequate therapy or eliminating allergens from the diet.
Allergological skin tests for nutritional allergens are an important diagnostic procedure for identifying allergies to certain foods, such as peanuts, eggs, milk and wheat. This process begins with the preparation of the patient, where the doctor collects information about previous allergies and medications the patient is taking.
After that, drops of a solution with allergens are applied to the inner part of the forearm through a prick test or an intradermal test. After 15 to 30 minutes, the doctor observes the reaction on the skin. The presence of redness, swelling or itching may indicate an allergic reaction.
These tests are performed to diagnose allergies, prevent serious reactions such as anaphylaxis, plan individualized therapy, and educate patients about their allergies. Essentially, allergy skin tests are an efficient and non-invasive way to improve patients' quality of life.
The duration of allergy skin tests for nutritional allergens usually ranges from one to two hours. This time frame includes several phases. The first phase is the preparation of the patient, which lasts 15 to 30 minutes, and includes gathering information about history and current medication. After that, the allergen is applied to the skin, which lasts only a few minutes, depending on the number of tested allergens. After application, the doctor monitors the skin reaction for 15 to 30 minutes, and in some cases additional observation may be necessary to ensure that no later reaction occurs. Overall, patients can plan to be seen for one to two hours, including all steps of the process.
Is it necessary to stop taking antihistamines before the test?
Yes, it is recommended that you stop taking antihistamines at least 5 to 7 days before the test, because they can affect the test results. Consult your doctor before stopping the therapy.
Do the results of skin tests mean that I have to permanently avoid certain foods?
The results of skin tests help identify potential allergens. Based on the results and your symptoms, the doctor will give you recommendations on which foods to avoid and whether additional testing is necessary.
Can children be tested?
Yes, allergy skin tests can also be performed on children, and the doctor will decide which tests are most suitable for the child's age.
