MDCT pulmonary angiography is a specific diagnostic technique that uses multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) to evaluate the pulmonary arteries. This test is especially used to detect pulmonary embolism, which is a serious condition that occurs when a blood clot blocks blood vessels in the lungs. MDCT pulmonary angiography enables detailed visualization of pulmonary arteries and their branches, providing a clear picture of the state of blood flow inside the lungs. This method is fast, efficient and very reliable, which makes it a key tool in the diagnosis and assessment of various lung conditions. Through this technique, doctors can quickly and accurately identify problems that require immediate medical intervention, thereby improving the patient's prognosis and reducing the risk of complications.
The procedure begins with placing the patient on the scanner table. Before imaging, an intravenous contrast agent is given to the patient to improve the visibility of the pulmonary arteries on the images. During the recording, the patient will be asked to hold his breath for a few seconds, which allows for clearer images. The recording itself takes a few minutes, and the entire procedure, including preparation and explanation, usually lasts between 20 and 30 minutes. This technique is used to identify and evaluate various conditions of the pulmonary arteries, especially in cases of suspected pulmonary embolism. Rapid diagnosis is essential because pulmonary embolism can be a life-threatening condition. MDCT pulmonary angiography allows doctors to obtain precise and detailed information about blood flow in the lungs, which helps them make informed decisions about further treatment and intervention.
The duration of the MDCT pulmonary angiography examination usually ranges from 20 to 30 minutes. The imaging itself lasts between 5 and 15 minutes, while additional time includes patient preparation, intravenous administration of the contrast agent and explanation of the procedure. After the examination, the patient can immediately resume his daily activities, but it is advisable to stay close to the medical staff to ensure that there are no unwanted reactions to the contrast medium.
Is it necessary to hold your breath during recording?
Yes, the patient will be asked to hold their breath for a few seconds during the scan to obtain clearer images of the pulmonary arteries.
How long does recovery take after pulmonary angiography?
MDCT pulmonary angiography is a non-invasive procedure and does not require special recovery. Patients can usually return to their normal activities immediately after the examination.
Are there any risks associated with contrast media during pulmonary angiography?
As with any procedure involving contrast media, there is a small risk of an allergic reaction. However, the medical staff is trained to recognize and react quickly in case of any unwanted reactions.
When will I know the results of the examination?
MDCT pulmonary angiography results are usually processed within a few hours to a few days. The doctor will inform you about the results and possible further steps after analyzing the recordings.
