Pain assessment is essential for proper treatment and improvement of the quality of life of patients suffering from acute or chronic pain. The doctor assesses the type of pain (eg, sharp, dull, stabbing, throbbing) and its intensity using various methods, including questionnaires, pain scales (such as the VAS - visual analogue scale) and a detailed interview with the patient. It is also important to determine whether the pain is localized or diffuse, as well as whether it is related to a specific illness or injury.
Based on the assessment, the doctor then selects the appropriate pain treatment. Pain therapy can include drugs (analgesics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, opioids, antiepileptics, antidepressants), physical therapy, application of local treatments (such as creams, patches or injections) and other techniques such as acupuncture, relaxation or cognitive-behavioral therapy. Therapy is adjusted according to the intensity of the pain, its type and the patient's response to previous treatments.
During the initial examination, the doctor carefully talks with the patient, asking questions about the nature of the pain (where it occurs, how it is described, when it starts and what makes it worse or reduces it). By using pain scales (e.g. VAS or McGill scale), the doctor gets an insight into the intensity of the pain, which helps in deciding on therapy. After that, the doctor can recommend appropriate drugs and therapeutic methods. For chronic pain, therapy is often included in combination with physical exercises, psychological support and preventive measures.
Pain assessment usually lasts from 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the complexity of the problem and pain history. Adjusting the therapy may require additional consultations and adjustments over time, as the therapy may change based on the patient's response. The first adjustment period of the therapy usually lasts several weeks, while the possible treatment plan can be adjusted in order to achieve an optimal result.
How is the type and severity of pain assessed?
The doctor uses pain scales and a conversation with the patient to assess the intensity of the pain and determine the appropriate therapy.
How often is it necessary to adjust the pain therapy?
Adjusting the therapy may be necessary every few days or as needed, depending on the patient's condition.
Is pain assessment only subjective?
Pain assessment involves talking to the patient, but the doctor uses pain scales and analyzes reactions to provide a more precise insight.
How often is pain assessed in patients at home?
In patients with chronic pain, assessment may be required every few days to adjust therapy.
