Tracheostomy cannula replacement is a medical procedure performed when an existing cannula needs to be replaced in a patient with a tracheostomy. This procedure includes the careful removal of the old cannula and the introduction of a new one, in order to ensure adequate patency of the airways and enable continuous ventilation and breathing of the patient. Replacement of the cannula may be required due to infections, contamination of the cannula, change in its shape or the condition of the patient.
The patient is placed in a supine position with a slight tilt of the head backwards. The appropriate material is being prepared: a new cannula, sterile instruments, antiseptics and an aspirator. The area around the tracheostomy wound is cleaned and disinfected, and if necessary, the patient is locally anesthetized or sedated. The old cannula is carefully removed, and a new one is inserted with constant breathing control. After insertion, the position of the cannula is checked and its fixation is ensured. Postprocedural care includes clearing secretions, wound protection, and monitoring vital signs, especially respiratory status.
Tracheostomy cannula replacement usually takes 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the patient's condition and possible complications.
