Arterial puncture for gas analysis is a diagnostic procedure that allows measurement of blood gas concentrations, such as oxygen (O₂), carbon dioxide (CO₂) and pH value. This test is crucial for assessing respiratory function, the efficiency of gas exchange in the lungs, as well as for diagnosing respiratory or metabolic disorders, such as respiratory insufficiency, respiratory acidosis or alkalosis. Gas analyzes can be helpful in monitoring the condition of patients on ventilators or those with serious lung diseases.
Arterial puncture is performed by inserting a needle into an artery, usually at the wrist (radial artery) or in the groin (femoral artery). First, the skin at the injection site is disinfected, and then a small sample of arterial blood is taken using a needle. The sample is immediately sent to the laboratory for analysis, where gas concentration and pH value are measured. During the procedure, the patient may feel slight pain or discomfort, but the procedure is usually quick and relatively harmless.
Arterial puncture and blood sampling usually takes 5-10 minutes. Once the sample is taken, the blood gas analysis is done quickly, and results are usually available within 15-30 minutes. The doctor then interprets the results in order to assess the patient's condition and make appropriate therapeutic or diagnostic decisions.
What is an arterial puncture?
Arterial puncture is performed to collect a blood sample for gas analysis, in order to assess the level of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood.
Does arterial puncture cause pain?
The procedure may cause slight discomfort, but the medical staff performs it carefully to minimize discomfort.
When is a blood gas analysis required?
This analysis is necessary in patients with respiratory or metabolic disorders, in order to evaluate the level of gases in the blood.
Are there risks with arterial puncture?
Risks are minimal when the procedure is performed in sterile conditions, but there may be mild discomfort.
