MDCT (Multidetector Computed Tomography) of the chest is a modern diagnostic method that enables detailed imaging of the structures inside the chest, including the lungs, heart, blood vessels, and other vital organs. This technique uses multiple detectors that record multiple images simultaneously, enabling faster and more accurate diagnosis of various diseases and conditions.
MDCT is often used to identify pathologies such as tumors, pulmonary embolism, infections, or heart artery disease. In addition, this method provides detailed three-dimensional views, which helps doctors in planning surgical interventions and other therapies.
An MDCT (multidetector computed tomography) examination of the chest is performed for a detailed examination of the internal structures of the chest, such as the lungs, heart and blood vessels. Patient preparation includes information about the procedure, and intravenous contrast may be required to improve imaging visibility. During the examination, the patient lies on a moving table that slowly moves through the MDCT machine, while the layers of the chest are taken from different angles. The whole process usually takes a few minutes. MDCT is used to diagnose various diseases, such as lung diseases, heart diseases or conditions related to blood vessels. This method enables quick and precise diagnostics, which helps doctors in making clinical decisions and planning further procedures.
The duration of an MDCT chest examination usually ranges between 10 and 30 minutes, depending on the specific protocols and preparations required.
The scanning process itself only takes a few minutes, often between 15 and 30 seconds, while the patient moves through the machine. However, the total duration of the examination also includes time for patient preparation, such as explaining the procedure, possibly giving a contrast medium, as well as the time needed to place the patient in the appropriate position.
Thanks to the speed of MDCT technology, patients usually do not have to wait long for the results, and the scan can be done quickly, which makes this procedure efficient in clinical practice.
How is the examination performed?
The patient lies on a moving table that moves slowly through the MDCT machine while the layers of the chest are taken. The examination lasts a few minutes, with the possible use of a contrast agent.
Is the examination painful?
No, the MDCT examination is non-invasive and does not cause pain. Some patients may feel discomfort during the application of the contrast medium.
How to prepare for the examination?
Before the examination, the patient should consult with the doctor about possible restrictions, such as avoiding food or drink several hours before the scan.
What are the benefits of MDCT?
MDCT provides fast and precise images that enable the diagnosis of various conditions, such as lung diseases, heart diseases and conditions related to blood vessels.
Are there any risks?
As with any X-ray method, there is a small amount of radiation exposure, but the diagnostic benefits usually outweigh the risks.
