The intensivist's general examination is a thorough medical assessment of the patient that is performed in intensive care units. The aim of the examination is to assess the patient's overall health status, including vital signs, respiratory status, cardiovascular function, renal function and other relevant parameters. The intensivist, through careful monitoring and analysis, makes decisions about further steps in the therapy and monitoring of the patient.
The intensivist's examination begins with the analysis of medical reports and laboratory results, and then the basic vital parameters are measured and monitored: pulse, blood pressure, body temperature, SpO₂, respiratory rate and level of consciousness. The intensivist assesses the respiratory system, ventilation (if the patient uses a ventilator) and signs of respiratory distress. The cardiovascular system is monitored through heart rate, blood pressure and possible arrhythmias, while kidney function is assessed through urine analysis and creatinine and urea parameters. Laboratory analyses, including gas analyses, are performed to assess electrolytes, pH, CO₂ and O₂. Based on all the findings, the intensivist makes a decision on further therapeutic procedures.
The intensivist's general examination lasts from 20 to 40 minutes, depending on the patient's condition, the need for analysis and the speed of the reaction to therapy.
What does the intensivist's general examination include?
