A spirometric examination is a diagnostic test that measures lung function, especially capacity and air flow during inhalation and exhalation. Spirometry is a simple and quick test that allows the doctor to assess the efficiency of breathing and detect potential problems with the lungs.

The examination is performed by the patient sitting and putting his mouth on the special tube of the spirometer, while the nose is closed by a clip. The patient's task is to inhale as forcefully and deeply as possible, and then exhale through the tube as quickly and forcefully as possible. This process is repeated several times to obtain precise data. During the test, the device measures the amount of air that the patient takes in and expels from the lungs, as well as the rate of exhalation. The test does not cause pain or discomfort, but it is important that the patient follows the breathing instructions so that the results are accurate.

A spirometric examination usually lasts from 15 to 20 minutes. During this period of time, the patient performs several breathing cycles, while the doctor or technician collects the necessary data. The interpretation of the results can take an additional 10-15 minutes, depending on the complexity of the findings, and the doctor then analyzes the results in order to make a diagnosis or recommend further steps in treatment.
