A specialist rheumatology examination is intended for patients with suspected Sjögren’s syndrome – a chronic autoimmune disease that primarily affects the exocrine glands (salivary and lacrimal glands) but may also have systemic manifestations.
The examination is indicated for individuals presenting with symptoms such as dry eyes, dry mouth, difficulty swallowing, frequent dental cavities, chronic fatigue, joint pain, enlarged salivary glands, or positive immunological tests (anti-SSA/Ro, anti-SSB/La).
The goal of the examination is to confirm or rule out the diagnosis, assess systemic involvement, and define an individualized treatment and monitoring plan.
The examination begins with a detailed medical history focusing on:
This is followed by a clinical examination, which includes:
If needed, additional diagnostics are recommended (extended immunological panel, ophthalmologist consultation, salivary gland ultrasound).
Based on the complete assessment, a treatment plan is defined (local measures, systemic therapy, immunosuppressants for systemic forms).
45–60 minutes, taking into account the need for a detailed systemic assessment and review of laboratory results.
In cases where the patient brings extensive medical documentation or has associated autoimmune diseases, the examination may last up to 60–75 minutes to allow a comprehensive evaluation of the condition and risk of complications.
Do dry mouth and eyes always indicate Sjögren’s syndrome?
No. Dryness can have many causes, but persistent symptoms require a rheumatology evaluation.
Is the disease limited only to the glands?
Not always. In some patients, joints, lungs, kidneys, and the nervous system can also be affected.
Is lifelong treatment necessary?
It depends on the severity of the disease and the extent of systemic involvement.
Does Sjögren’s syndrome increase the risk of other diseases?
In certain cases, there may be an increased risk of lymphoma, which is why regular monitoring is important.
How often are follow-up visits needed?
Follow-up visits are planned individually, most often every 6–12 months for stable patients.
