The initial specialist rheumatology examination is intended for patients who experience joint pain, morning stiffness, swelling, chronic fatigue, back pain, muscle pain, positive immunological test results, or suspected inflammatory or degenerative joint diseases.
The examination includes a comprehensive assessment of the condition of the joints, connective tissue, and the immune system, with the aim of establishing an accurate diagnosis or defining the next steps in the diagnostic process.
Special emphasis is placed on the early detection of autoimmune diseases (such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and vasculitis), as well as distinguishing them from degenerative changes (osteoarthritis), metabolic disorders (gout), and chronic pain syndromes.
The goal of the examination is to:
✔ Establish an accurate diagnosis
✔ Assess disease activity
✔ Define an appropriate treatment plan
✔ Plan further monitoring and follow-up.
The examination begins with a detailed medical history that includes:
This is followed by a systematic clinical examination:
The physician analyzes existing laboratory and radiological findings (RF, anti-CCP, ANA, CRP, ESR, HLA-B27, X-ray, MRI, DEXA), and if necessary, recommends additional tests or referral for further diagnostic procedures.
Based on the complete clinical picture, a decision is made regarding therapy or further evaluation.
On average, the examination lasts 60 minutes, as the initial visit requires a detailed medical interview, a systematic clinical examination, and review of medical documentation.
In cases of a complex clinical picture, extensive medical records, or suspicion of a systemic autoimmune disease, the examination may last up to 75 minutes to allow a thorough assessment and planning of further treatment.
The initial examination is the most important step in diagnosis, as it enables a comprehensive understanding of the patient’s condition and the establishment of a clear therapeutic plan.
Do I need to have tests done before my visit?
It is not mandatory. However, if you already have laboratory or radiological results, it is recommended that you bring them with you.
When is the right time to see a rheumatologist?
If joint pain lasts longer than six weeks, or if there is morning stiffness or swelling, a specialist consultation is recommended.
Is the examination painful?
No. The examination is non-invasive and consists of an interview and a clinical assessment.
Is the treatment started immediately?
In some cases, yes; in others, additional diagnostic tests are recommended before starting treatment.
How often are follow-up visits needed after the initial examination?
Depending on the diagnosis and disease activity, follow-up visits are scheduled individually.
