Anxiety – when worry stops being helpful and becomes a problem?
When constant worry becomes part of everyday life
We all worry sometimes. Worry is a natural response to uncertainty and can motivate us to prepare, be responsible, and stay cautious. However, when worry becomes constantly present, when the body responds with tension, a rapid heartbeat, and restlessness without a clear reason – then we are talking about anxiety that requires attention.
Many people with anxiety function “normally” on the outside for a long time, while internally they feel constant pressure. Thoughts keep circling, scenarios repeat, and the sense of danger never seems to disappear.
Anxiety is not a weakness. It is a signal that internal conflict or prolonged stress requires understanding.
How does anxiety manifest?
Anxiety can have psychological and physical symptoms.
Some people feel constant tension, irritability, and an inability to relax. Others experience physical symptoms: a rapid heartbeat, a lump-in-the-throat sensation, chest tightness, sweating, or dizziness.
In some cases, panic attacks occur – intense waves of fear accompanied by physical symptoms that can resemble a heart attack.
It is important to understand that these symptoms are real and come from activation of the nervous system, but they do not indicate physical danger.
Why does anxiety occur?
In the psychodynamic approach, anxiety is not seen merely as a symptom to be “switched off,” but as a message.
It is often connected to repressed emotions, unresolved conflicts, high internal demands, or fear of losing control.
Sometimes it originates from early experiences in which a person learned to perceive the world as unsafe.
Understanding the origin of anxiety enables lasting change, not just temporary relief of symptoms.
When should you seek psychotherapy?
If anxiety:
- lasts for months
- disrupts sleep
- affects work or relationships
- leads to avoidance of situations
- causes panic attacks
it is time for a professional assessment.
Psychotherapy provides a space to understand what lies behind the symptoms and how to develop more stable ways of coping.
What happens during therapy?
Psychodynamic psychotherapy involves conversation in a safe and confidential space. The focus is on understanding internal patterns, relationships, and emotions that influence the current state.
The goal is not only to reduce tension, but to develop a deeper understanding of oneself.
As insight increases, anxiety becomes more manageable and less dominant.
Anxiety is common and treatable. It is not a sign of weakness, but a signal that the inner world needs attention.
